Gulf Coast freshman and former Mosley Dolphin Derrio Green verbally committed to UNC-Charlotte late Monday night, Gulf Coast coach Jay Powell confirmed.
Green was weighing his options between Charlotte and fellow Atlantic 10 foes Saint Louis University and George Washington University.
The 49ers first started to recruit Green during the FCCAA/Region 8 state tournament back in March.
Assistant coach Rob Moxley was in the stands in Marianna as Green averaged 22.7 points per game in the state tournament, including a 38-point outing in the opener, an upset of Miami Dade.
Moxley told me after that game that he was going to start chasing Green, who averaged 13.6 ppg last season.
Green, who was All-Panhandle Conference, was third in the state in 3-point percentage, shooting at a 44.2 percent clip. His 76 attempts were the third most in the state and this 33 makes were tied with two other players for the second best in Florida.
Green transferred to Gulf Coast from Southeastern Louisiana, where he went out of Mosley.
Moxley said Green’s quick release and long-range shooting ability made him appealing to the 49ers.
UNC-Charlotte was 11-20 last season and finished 12thh out of 14 teams in the Atlantic 10.

The four Chipola Lady Indians who did not play in Saturday’s 66-62 loss to Northwest Florida State College will return for tonight’s game against Pensacola, coach David Lane said.
Latoya Williams, Ashlie Billingslea, Sequoyah Griffin and Georgian Williams were suspended for violating team rules, Lane said. Latoya Williams and Billingslea were Chipola’s two leading scorers.
The quartet had a good practice Monday and are expected to be reinstated, Lane said.
“We could have used them,” he said. “We still had plenty of opportunities to win the game. I don’t know if we’ll ever see eye to eye on it.”

Former Gulf Coast Lady Commodore Dee Liles paid a visit to north Florida last night, along with her University of Maryland teammates.
The Lady Terrapins won 72-71 on a last-second shot by Kristi Toliver. Liles, a junior, played 36 minutes, second only to Toliver’s 40, and scored 10 points.
She’s established herself as one of the top newcomers in the country. For the season, she’s averaging 11.5 points per game and a team-high 8.9 rebounds.
Last season at Gulf Coast, Liles was named the player of the year after she helped the Lady Commodores to the national championship.
