I never saw Mickey Mantle play.

By time I was old enough to remember who I was watching, Mantle was on his way to an early death from liver cancer.

I was, however, able to see and remember Brett Favre play.

Growing up in Minnesota, I watched Favre against the Vikings in some of his most passionate games.

With Favre’s retirement still a fresh memory, his personal life has once again become public matter.

And I’ll say this: Brett Favre is my generation’s Mickey Mantle.

Both grew up in rural areas. Mantle in Oklahoma, Favre in Mississippi.

Neither took the fast track to success. Neither were top picks in their respective drafts. None came in with endorsement deals already inked.

Both were just two down-home country boys, just like most of America.

Both weren’t loved by all the fans of their sports. Some said Mantle was too crippled. Some said Favre was too reckless. But they
won championships. In the world of professional sports, titles are what separates athletes.

Reading stories and listening to my father talk about Mantle, he was who every red-blooded, baseball-loving man wanted to be like. Talented, handsome and without a care. That disregard for himself eventually came back to kill him in 1995.

Favre nearly went through the same series of events.

He battled a drug addiction early in his career, but, like Mantle who checked himself into the Betty Ford Center two years before he died, Favre took the proper steps in curtailing an addiction that could have led to the same ending.

Maybe it’s how times have changed. In the 1950s and 60s, when Mantle flourished in front of America’s baseball fans, he epitomized the American man.

Now, Favre is.

After watching the fallout of football fans and just Favre fans alike, the similarities are scary. Grown men related to Favre, who still wears his Wranglers and doesn’t, to the public at least, live the glamorous life that many star-studded athletes do today.

Many of whom are far less accomplished or beloved than Favre.

Mantle and Favre were rugged, everyday guys. They’re the type of guys we want to sit down and have a beer with, BS with, watch a game with.

Both men were talented athletes. Both won championships. Most of all, both won the hearts the sports fans everywhere, men or women by just being themselves.
