Sophomore tight end Aaron Hernandez has become a favorite target of Tebow.

He has seven catches through three games, two short of last season’s total. He’s second on the team with 73 receiving yards and his two touchdowns tied last season’s mark.

“He is almost a grown man,” Meyer said. “Last year he was not. He has really grown up and matured. He’s a product of (strength and conditioning) Mickey Marotti, (tight ends coach) John Hevesy, the University of Florida and our OSL (Office of Student Life).

“He’s here at the right place at the right time.”

Hernandez’s touchdowns have capped the Gators first drive in their last two games, but it’s his intangibles that have drawn Tebow to the 6-foot-3, 255-pound Connecticut native.

“He worked really hard to understand our philosophy, game plans,” Tebow said. “He’s hard to cover, because he’s so big and strong. He can pick up blocks and provide good pass protection. We’ve also seen him make runs downfield.”
