September 18th, 2008, 3:30 pm by Josh Weinfuss

Watch out for an Appy State-type upset.

Here’s the docket for this week’s SEC games. My picks for Games of the Week are bolded.

All Times Central

    Saturday, Sept. 20

Alabama at Arkansas, 11:30 a.m., Raycom - A matchup of two former NFL coaches.

LSU at Auburn, 6:45 p.m., ESPN - This game could have major implications in the SEC and the BCS down the road.

Florida at Tennessee, 2:30 p.m., CBS - Will the Gators roll over the Vols again?

Georgia at Arizona State, 7:13 p.m., ABC - Game of the week, but the air is taken out of it because the Sun Devils aren’t ranked. The Bulldogs never seem to leave the Southeast. Let’s see how they play on the real road.

Vanderbilt at Ole Miss, 6 p.m. - A once bottomfeeder game will now be one of the weekend’s best.

Mississippi State at Georgia Tech, 11 a.m., Raycom - Just a good ole’ interconference battle.

WTF’s with college football…and my BCS pick

September 15th, 2008, 4:27 pm by Josh Weinfuss

I have a feeling this season is about to get out of hand. With so many teams winning and dropping in the polls, coaches are about to pile it on every chance they can to convince the voters and put themselves in contention of the BCS national championship game.

As of right now, it looks like USC, Oklahoma, Florida and maybe even Wisconsin could be the vying for a BCS berth come December.

No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 5 Missouri are in different divisions of the Big 12 and don’t play during the regular season. The only time they could see each other is in the Big 12 championship game in December.

But by then, Texas could be the spoiler. The seventh-ranked Longhorns have both Oklahoma and Missouri on its schedule. If they win both, Texas is in the title game. If they win one and lose one, the Big 12 could have three teams with one loss come the end of the season.

That gives way to a USC-Florida national title game. The Trojans are a given, I think, to make it to Miami. The Gators, on the other hand, have one of the toughest schedules in the country. If they can beat Georgia in Jacksonville, Tennessee on the road this weekend and LSU on Oct. 11, I don’t see how the BCS could not have the Gators in the title game.

However, the chances of Florida going undefeated could also be slim.

Wisconsin is the dark horse. Now ranked eighth, the highest non SEC or Big 12 team below No. 1, the Badgers plays both Ohio State and Michigan. While the Wolverines don’t look like a Big Ten championship-caliber team now, conference play is always a different story. If Bucky can beat Ohio State, the chips may just fall in their favor.

The question may come down to how many undefeated and one-loss teams are in the SEC and Big 12?

I’m not picking an outcome, all I’m saying is it’s going to be a track meet. The only way USC could be beat is if a team goes over the top of it. Ohio State not having or having Beenie Wells wasn’t going to make a difference.

Teams like Florida, Oklahoma and Missouri have a very good shot at upending the Trojans.
