BCS Buster of Week 5: BYU

October 1st, 2008, 9:28 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Josh Weinfuss

Here’s the sad thing about the Mountain West Conference: No. 8 BYU isn’t in first place in its own conference. No. 15 Utah is.

The Cougars are 4-0 and have out scored their opponents 43-11 this season, including back-to-back 59-0 and 44-0 wins over UCLA and Wyoming, respectively.

If the season ended today, by WTF’s calculations, BYU would end up in the Sugar Bowl against No. 3 LSU.

A few things to remember when predicting the BCS bowls:

First, bowls that lose their teams to the National Championship Game get first pick among all remaining non-automatic bid teams.

Second, no more than two teams from one conference is allowed to be in the BCS bowls. So, the SEC would get the short end of the stick this year with five teams in the Top 14.

Third, if a team from Conference USA, MAC, MWC, Sun Belt or the WAC wins its conference and is among the Top 12, it gets an automatic bid.

In this situation, BYU would crash the BCS party thanks to the third reason.

My Week 5 bowl predictions:

BCS: No. 1 Oklahoma vs. No. 2 Alabama
Rose: No. 6 Penn State vs. No. 9 USC
Fiesta: No. 4 Missouri vs. No. 14 Ohio State
Sugar: No. 3 LSU vs. No. 8 Brigham Young
Orange: Virginia Tech vs. No. 10 South Florida
