WTF with National Signing Day, Johnny Gray and more

February 4th, 2009, 6:26 pm by Josh Weinfuss

I thought I’d clarify something that went on at Arnold today to all you WTF fans.

We were told that Jake Bowen, one of Bay County’s best defensive players, was supposed to sign a national let-ter of intent with South Alabama, which is forming a football team next season.

It turns out, that wasn’t true. We’re still not sure what Bowen signed this morning, but it wasn’t a NLI. Whether it was a miscommunication between USA coaches and his mother, or just a misunderstanding, Bowen will try to walk on to the Jaguars, who will play their first full season in 2010.

Bowen wasn’t included in my story on the Arnold signings because we don’t write about walk-ons in the print edition. Hence, why I’m talk-ing about it here on my blog.

Hope that clarifies some questions or concerns.

Gray chooses Troy
One noticeable name was absent from today’s ceremony at Arnold High School for National Signing Day. The Marlins quarterback, Johnny Gray, wasn’t among the three seniors inking their names to play at the next level.

That’s because Gray, who threw for 691 yards and six touchdowns last season, opted to be a preferred walk-on at Troy, a Sun Belt Conference school.

“It’s just close to home and I’ve wanted to play ball there, so I’m just going to go and walk on,” Gray said. “That’s the best of the best. You have to be good to get on the field. If you’re starting at a Division I program, then you know you’re one of the best in the country, period. That’s as big as it gets. That’s what I’ve always wanted to do.”

Troy recruited Gray briefly during his sophomore year. His lack of speed is no secret around Bay County, but Gray the opportunity to play at some Division II, Division III and NAIA schools. Instead, he’s trying to be one of 15 possible walk-ons out of a field of 60.

Gray said one Trojan assistant told him he should be selected.

“I’m probably going to get redshirted,” Gray said. “They told me to report in July and start working out and start practicing and all that stuff.”

If not, he may stay at Troy and get his degree or try to play else where.

“I haven’t even thought about that yet,” he said.

Suspended Chipola players to return

February 3rd, 2009, 6:07 pm by Josh Weinfuss

The four Chipola Lady Indians who did not play in Saturday’s 66-62 loss to Northwest Florida State College will return for tonight’s game against Pensacola, coach David Lane said.

Latoya Williams, Ashlie Billingslea, Sequoyah Griffin and Georgian Williams were suspended for violating team rules, Lane said. Latoya Williams and Billingslea were Chipola’s two leading scorers.

The quartet had a good practice Monday and are expected to be reinstated, Lane said.

“We could have used them,” he said. “We still had plenty of opportunities to win the game. I don’t know if we’ll ever see eye to eye on it.”

Dee Liles, UM escape FSU with win

February 3rd, 2009, 5:15 pm by Josh Weinfuss

Former Gulf Coast Lady Commodore Dee Liles paid a visit to north Florida last night, along with her University of Maryland teammates.

The Lady Terrapins won 72-71 on a last-second shot by Kristi Toliver. Liles, a junior, played 36 minutes, second only to Toliver’s 40, and scored 10 points.

She’s established herself as one of the top newcomers in the country. For the season, she’s averaging 11.5 points per game and a team-high 8.9 rebounds.

Last season at Gulf Coast, Liles was named the player of the year after she helped the Lady Commodores to the national championship.

Isn’t football like porn to some fans?

February 2nd, 2009, 4:03 pm by Josh Weinfuss

This just came across the Associated Press’ wire. Thought I’d pass on to you what residents of Tucson saw TV just after Larry Fitzgerald a touchdown pass late in the game.

“A cable television provider has apologized to Tucson-area customers over a 30-second porn interruption during the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia-based Comcast issued a brief statement Monday saying the company is “mortified” and is conducting a thorough investigation.

Comcast spokeswoman Jennifer Khoury says the initial investigation suggests that the interruption was an “isolated, malicious act.”

The company says only customers in the Tucson area receiving the standard definition feed — not high definition — were affected.

Tucson media outlets reported that they received calls from irate viewers about the porn, which aired just after the Arizona Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald scored on a long touchdown reception during the game’s final minutes.”
