My BCS NCG prediction

January 8th, 2009, 4:36 pm by Josh Weinfuss

A lot has been made out of Tim Tebow’s humanity, Oklahoma’s no-huddle offense and Florida’s speed during this week’s lead up to the FedEx BCS National Championship Game in Miami.

But I think it’s the Sooners secondary that will be the difference between an Oklahoma win or a Florida win.

If Oklahoma’s secondary can play like it did against Texas Tech late in the season, I don’t think Florida’s speed will have a chance to win it the game. But that won’t be the case. The Gators will get to the outside and break through the tackles, and through the Sooners secondary en route to a second national championship in three years.

Final score: Florida 45, Oklahoma 38.

Stoops a little misinformed

January 8th, 2009, 12:55 pm by Josh Weinfuss

I was listening to ESPN Radio last week and a clip was played of Bob Stoops announcing that the Oklahoma Sooners played five ranked teams this season, more than any other team in the country.

Well, Bob, you’re wrong.

First, the Sooners played six: No. 24 TCU (Sept. 21), No. 5 Texas (Oct. 5), No. 16 Kansas (Oct. 12), No. 2 Texas Tech (Nov. 22), No. 11 Oklahoma State (Nov. 29) and No. 19 Missouri (Dec. 6).

That’s one more than the Gators played.

They’ll both up their totals tonight. Florida is ranked No. 1 in the country according to The Associated Press and Oklahoma is No. 2.

An unlimited day of golf for $40

January 7th, 2009, 4:31 pm by Josh Weinfuss

The Origins Course at Watersound is offering an unlimited day of golf for $40 if you walk and $60 with a cart from Jan. 1-March 15.

The nine-hole rate is $25 and 18-hole rate is $35, and $50 with a cart.

Golfers under age 15 can play for free.

Not bad for one of the better courses in the area.

The Origins is a Davis Love III designed course that features a six-hole course, nine-hole executive course and a 10-hole par 3.

Two Gators will play in Senior Bowl

January 7th, 2009, 3:13 pm by Josh Weinfuss

Florida seniors Louis Murphy and Jason Watkins will extend their college football careers by one more game.

The wide receiver and offensive tackle, respectively, were invited to play in the Under Armour Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on Jan. 24.

Murphy caught 36 passes for 611 yards and six touchdowns this season, the best of his career. The St. Petersburg native has caught a pass in 26-straight games dating back to Florida’s 2007 season opener against Western Kentucky.

Watkins started all 13 games this season and was named an honorable mention selection to this season’s Associated Press All-SEC team. This was the second consecutive season that Watkins started for an entire season.

The two Gators play for a second national championship in three years Thursday night against No. 2 Oklahoma.

The Senior Bowl is considered one of the top pre-draft scouting weeks.

Scovel: TCC more athletic

January 6th, 2009, 8:04 pm by Josh Weinfuss

In the eyes of Gulf Coast women’s basketball coach, Tuesday night’s win over Tallahassee proved one thing: Athleticism doesn’t always mean a victory.

She said the Lady Eagles were more athletic than the young Lady Commodores at most positions, but added that doesn’t mean they were more talented.

Gulf Coast showed Tuesday that basketball talent is worth more than athletic talent, and how it’s easy to overcome.

“I think staying composed and executing in the second half,” Scovel said.
