The four Chipola Lady Indians who did not play in Saturday’s 66-62 loss to Northwest Florida State College will return for tonight’s game against Pensacola, coach David Lane said.

Latoya Williams, Ashlie Billingslea, Sequoyah Griffin and Georgian Williams were suspended for violating team rules, Lane said. Latoya Williams and Billingslea were Chipola’s two leading scorers.

The quartet had a good practice Monday and are expected to be reinstated, Lane said.

“We could have used them,” he said. “We still had plenty of opportunities to win the game. I don’t know if we’ll ever see eye to eye on it.”

Chipola remained on top of this week’s men’s NJCAA Top 25 after it stayed perfect in Panhandle Conference play.

The only other Panhandle team ranked is Northwest Florida State, which has lost three in a row and four of its five conference games. The voters must have missed that.

Ellis was dismissed from the team after last season by interim coach Dan Dakich. New coach Tom Crean upheld that decision Friday. Rumors have circulated that Ellis was not attending class.

Reason for Thomas’ dismissal were not given.

Indiana finished 25-8 last season and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Hoosiers finished the season in a state of mayhem after Kelvin Sampson resigned on Feb. 22 after the NCAA revealed a report that he committed five major infractions. Dakich took over and led IU to a 3-4 record including a loss in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Jamarcus Ellis, the defending junior college national player of the year, started for the eighth-ranked Hoosiers (1-0) in their season opener against Chattanooga. He had five points and nine rebounds in the 99-77 win.

DeAndre Thomas, the 6-foot-8 center had 11 points and three rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson rewarded Thomas for his first-half play.

“I started DeAndre in the second half to be more physical,” Sampson said. “(It) allows you to play (him with D.J. White in the same lineup), and I don’t know that he could have done it two or three weeks ago. But that has been part of our plan.”

Ellis and Thomas helped lead Chipola to the NJCAA national championship game last season, where they lost to Midland, 94-75.
